The sport of All-Star Cheerleading has grown immensely over the past 20 years. In the beginning, teams were formed of athletes interested in improving their skills so that they would stand a better chance of making their high school or college cheer teams. As the sport grew, both athletes and parents alike realized the validity of the sport in and of itself. The sport has since outgrown its stereotypical image of girls with pom-poms and has become a sport featuring true athletes. Today’s cheerleading is a combination of gymnastics, acrobatics, athletic dance, and many other impressive elements unique to All-Star.
All-Star teams are typically comprised of 12-32 athletes with a variety of skills and abilities (much like a football, basketball or volleyball team.) An All-Star team is generally comprised of solid, well-rounded athletes and those who have particularly strong abilities in certain areas (ex. – dancers, jumpers or tumblers). In order for a team to be successful, the team must be comprised of athletes of all sizes and abilities. A team needs bases (those who lift) flyers (those who are lifted) and back spots (those who stabilize the stunt while it’s in the air). Coaches create a competition routine that has elements of tumbling, stunting, jumping, dancing, and other skills set to music. The routines are 2 1/2 minutes in length. At competitions, the teams are divided by age and ability level. The routines are judged by their level of difficulty, precision, creativity and entertainment value. Indiana Ultimate not only offers All-Star cheerleading, but we have a very well established hip hop dance program as well. We are the only gym in Indiana to have take a hip hop dance team to the USASF Dance Worlds 8 consecutive years.
There are many all-star programs of all types across the country. While not every program is a perfect fit for every athlete, we, at Indiana Ultimate, believe that we have a solid, family-friendly program that is the right choice for the brand-new beginning athlete to the elite veteran. All-Star cheer & dance is a great way for young athletes to learn new skills while building teamwork, goal-setting, sportsmanship, and numerous other social and character skills while making lifelong friendships.
